18/0 vs 18/10 stainless steel – what’s the difference?
You’ll often see these numbers when looking at cutlery and catering equipment, but what do they actually mean?
The numbers refer to the percentage of chromium and nickel in the stainless steel:
18/0
18% chromium + 0% nickel.
It’s generally more affordable making it suitable for many commercial applications.
18/10
18% chromium + 10% nickel.
The addition of nickel gives it a more polished appearance and generally improves its resistance to corrosion.
So which should you choose?
For everyday commercial use, 18/0 can be a practical, cost-effective option. If appearance, finish and corrosion resistance are higher priorities, 18/10 is often the preferred choice.
The right option will depend on what you’re buying and how it’s going to be used.
